Germaine Arnaktauyok is an Inuit artist from Nunavut, born in 1946. Both of Arnaktauyok’s parents were carvers, but she lost touch with them after graduating from Chesterfield Inlet Residential School, never to return. Arnaktauyok then went to the University of Manitoba to study fine arts. In 1999, when Nunavut joined the provinces of Canada, Germaine Arnaktauyok designed the face of the Toonie to represent the event.
