Raoul Dufy was a major 20th century French Fauvist. At age 15, while attending a local art school, he met Georges Braque, who would later become a fellow Fauvist. They started experimenting with Fauvist motif, cubism, in 1907, using flattened space and emphasis on form. Later that year he expanded his artistic skills by working with textile patterns and designing book illustrations, portraying subjects like landscapes, seascapes, figures, and views through an open window. Often the decoration on the walls of the studio in his paintings referred to his past works and his own personal history. Born in 1877, Dufy lived through and helped shape the birth of modern art. After 1907, Dufy became engrossed with a new theme involving subjects such as regattas, casinos, race courses, and orchestras. Dufy's calligraphic use of line is a notable design difference between his work and many other works in the CBU collection.
