In The Temple of Freedom Series

2000.12

Carol Kennedy used feminine imagery in her fashion
photography but also in works intended to make a social
statement. In an article she states, “I like to show women as
cool, aloof, self-confident, mysterious; goddesses rather
than objects.” In the Temple of Freedom was compiled from
ten different images. Inspired by poses found in classical
antiquity imagery, this photograph demonstrates Kennedy’s
efforts to evoke the essence of a Greek goddess,
awakening in stages of awareness. While the use of LED
technology was relatively new for the artist in the 1990s, the
artist’s technique of tinting and toning was a skill developed
early in her artistic practice. At the time of its creation, the
photograph was Kennedy’s favourite work. In an article
discussing the work Kennedy explains, “[m]y recent work is
a reflection of my physical surroundings and my spiritual
journey.”
