Paysage Marine

In a port city near Paris called Le Havre, Georges Braque was born in 1882. He was largely influenced by the Fauves: Henri Matisse, Cezanne and Andre Derain in the early 1900's. Braque, along with Picasso, is considered to be one of the pricipal founders of modern art. Together they developed two new art forms; the collage, and cubism. In 1914, Braque was enlisted in the French army and was severely wounded. After this, he developed a more personal style that uses brilliant colour and textured surfaces. Braque then moved to the seacoast of Normandy and began doing still-life pieces emphasizing structure.
